More About Receiving a Tutor

Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts at the Pollard Memorial Library provides free, confidential, and flexibly scheduled tutoring in either basic literacy or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Tutor and student pairs meet at mutually agreeable times and locations in the Greater Lowell area. A potential student must be over the age of 16, not enrolled in school, and willing to commit to regular tutoring.  Please note that there is a waiting list for services.

New Reader Collection

The Pollard Memorial Library has a collection of materials designed for our basic literacy and ESOL students. It is called the New Reader collection and is located on the First Floor of the library. Students on our waiting list are welcome to borrow materials from this collection while they wait for a tutor. For more information about our New Reader collection, please visit our collection overview.

Conversation Cafes

The Literacy Department is offering conversation cafes for those newer speakers of the English language to interact with native speakers in a safe, interactive setting. Conversation cafes are scheduled for most Friday mornings at 10:30 am or Monday nights at 6:30 pm. Confirm with the Events Calendar to ensure that a conversation cafe is scheduled for the day that you are planning to attend. This is open to the public and you do not need to be registered into the program to participate.
