Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts at the Pollard Memorial Library can help you learn to read better. We will find a tutor to help you. You and your tutor will meet privately each week for 2 hours. Your tutor will help you improve your reading and help you reach your goals. If a tutor is not available, you are welcome to join our beginner or intermediate classes until one is available.
Learn to Speak English
Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts at the Pollard Memorial Library can help you learn to speak English. We will find a tutor to help you. You and your tutor will meet privately each week for 2 hours. Your tutor will help you improve your English and help you reach your goals. If a tutor is not available, you are welcome to join our beginner or intermediate classes until one is available.
More About Receiving a Tutor
Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts at the Pollard Memorial Library (LVM@PML) provides free, confidential, and flexibly scheduled tutoring in either basic literacy or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Tutor and student pairs meet in person at mutually agreeable times at the library or other locations in the Greater Lowell area. Remote and hybrid tutoring options are also available. A potential student must be over the age of 16, not enrolled in school, and willing to commit to a regular tutoring schedule.
New Reader Collection
The Pollard Memorial Library has a collection of materials designed for our basic literacy and ESOL students and their tutors. It is called the New Reader collection and is located on the Second Floor of the library. Students are welcome to borrow materials from this collection with their library card while they wait for a tutor. Conversation Group & Beginning/Intermediate English Classes
Literacy Volunteers at the Pollard Memorial Library offers conversation groups for newer speakers of English to connect with native speakers in a safe, interactive setting. Currently, an intermediate/advanced level group meets Friday mornings from 10:30 until 12:30 online via Zoom and the 2nd Friday of each month in person at the library at the same time.
Beginning and intermediate level English classes meet in person on Tuesday mornings from 9-10:30am at the Lowell Senior Center, 276 Broadway Street.
The Basic English class meets at the library on Wednesday evenings from 6:15pm to 7:15pm in the 2nd floor classroom.
