Local Author Spotlight: David Daniel

Local Author Spotlight

David Daniel

Please describe your writing routine. Is there a time of day or place that is most productive for you?
Generally early morning– 5 a.m. for a couple hours.

Is there anything in Lowell or in the surrounding area that has inspired your work? Such a place to take nice walks or a piece of artwork?
When I first saw Lowell–mid 1980s–I was wowed by the look of it. It inspired me to write the four mysteries that became part of my award winning Alex Rasmussen private eye series.

What do you believe are the most important elements of writing? How do you incorporate it into your own work?
Characters, story-line (plot), dialog, setting . . . all interwoven. I never give thought to theme, preferring to let it emerge on its own from the story.

What advice would you give to a young writer and/or a writer starting their first creative work?  Be patient; be persistent. Try to write often. And read.

Do you have any reading recommendations?
Find things you like. Experiment. Try different writers.

David Daniel is author of more than a dozen books, including entries in the St. Martin’s Press prize-winning Alex Rasmussen mystery series: The Heaven Stone, The Skelly Man, Goofy Foot, and The Marble Kite. Other novels include White Rabbit, a novel of the Sixties. His newest book, Beach Town, a collection of short stories, is a bittersweet look at the loves and losses of characters, young and old, living in a coastal town. Born in Boston, Daniel has traveled widely and has been a teacher, surfer, tennis coach and clam digger.
