Local Author Spotlight
Aaron D. Tavares

Please describe your writing routine. Is there a time of day or place that is most productive for you?
I have an office / art studio in my basement. That’s where I do most of my writing, but I typically bring my laptop with me wherever I go, just in case. I usually write during the early evening, after dinner and a cup (6oz – no more) of coffee. Music helps, something I know well, or something that fits the scene I am going for.

Is there anything in Lowell or in the surrounding area that has inspired your work? Such a place to take nice walks or a piece of artwork?
I love Downtown Lowell. The mixed use of space Post-industrial commercial and residential areas loaded with art, give the city a forward-looking feel while being firmly planted in the past.

What do you believe are the most important elements of writing? How do you incorporate it into your own work?
My mind is very audio-visual. The stories come to me as movies. This becomes difficult, however, translating into words. Editing, scoring, camera movements are all there in my mind, and I have to transform the medium.

What advice would you give to a young writer and/or a writer starting their first creative work?
Write everything, every idea you have for a story, even if they are contradictory in nature. Just get it out of your head and onto paper. Rework, revise, and review. then do it all again.

What were your favorite books when you were a child?
I liked historical dystopian fiction… The Pearl comes to mind. And stories told by an unreliable narrator.

Do you have any reading recommendations?
Albert Camus… He makes me want to learn French to read his works in the original language.
