Happy Birthday Clifford

Driving to work today, I heard an NPR interview with Norman Bridwell, author of the Clifford books. Believe it or not, the big red dog turns fifty this year. Back in 1962, a struggling artist brought a series of paintings to publishers in New York. One publisher saw potential in one of the paintings, which evolved into Clifford The Big Red Dog.

As the mother of a preschooler, I’m quite familiar with Clifford and his owner, Emily Elizabeth. My daughters and I visit the library almost every week, and, sure enough, we come home with a Clifford book. I’m surprised I don’t have some of them memorized. We’ve read about Clifford as a puppy, his manners, his birthday, and his visit to the fire station. We’ve also celebrated most major holidays with Clifford and Emily Elizabeth.

The Pollard Memorial Library has a selection of Clifford books and videos, which you can see by clicking here.
