April is Move More Month

Every April, the American Heart Association promotes Move More Month. With the weather (hopefully) warming up and the days getting longer, it is the perfect time to think about ways we can move more and promote a healthy lifestyle. Lowell offers numerous opportunities to move more. The Greater Lowell YMCA has a lap pool, gym, group exercise classes, and weight and cardio machines. They offer programs for the whole family. You can sign up for dancing, yoga, and Zumba programs for adults and various sports and activities for kids through Lowell Parks & Recreation. Runners looking for camaraderie can join the Greater Lowell Road Runners. But, you don’t have to join a group or register for a class to move a little more. We are fortunate to have walking trails right in the city along the canals and Merrimack River. For more information, take a look at Lowell Waterways. I often take advantage of the Canal Walk and Riverwalk during my lunch hour.
For more information about getting active, take a look at the Move Your Way physical activity resources from the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. We have a display of books and handouts on the second floor near the older microfilm machines. Don’t forget about our electronic resources, Overdrive (Libby) for eBooks and eAudiobooks and Hoopla for eBooks, eAudiobooks, workout videos, and exercise playlists.
