Initially installed with the completion of the building of the library in 1893, the design was put out to bid. Five competitors submitted proposals using the fixed sum of $1500.00. The Redding, Baird & Co. out of Boston won the design, while C.B. Coburn & Co of Lowell created the rough glass outside of the stained glass windows.

These eight commemorative windows in Memorial Hall were destroyed in the 1915 fire. Patrick D. McAuliffe was awarded the bid to restore the large center window on the west wall “A Call to Arms” and what you see today is a reproduction. His winning bid was for $1,490 and was most recently restored in 1994. The stained glass panes consist of opalescent glass and antique glass where hand painting with vitreous paint is present.
