According to the Census, Massachusetts is the state that has the highest percentage of residents claiming Irish heritage – 21.2%. The Irish today also have a higher than average income and are more likely to own a home than the average citizen.  But  back in the day, they were considered only fit for digging and maintaining the canals – a backbreaking and dangerous job. And when  they were first hired, no provision was made for housing them because the mill owners thought they would only be here temporarily…How far we’ve come.
