First Round of Great Expectations Book Discussions Thursday and Friday, July 19th-20th

Now that we’ve had our film nights showing the larger contextual picture of Charles Dickens’ life and travels, and David Lean’s lovely cinematic interpretation of what some say is his greatest novel, it’s time to get back to the source material and have a good old fashioned book discussion.

The library is hosting two rounds of discussions this summer. The first round will cover the first part of the book, which is variously known (depending on which edition you are reading) as Volume 1, or The First Stage of Pip’s Expectations, or Chapters 1-19.  We will have  two separate, hour-long discussions next week: Thursday, July 19th @ 6:30pm-7:30pm and Friday, July 20th @ 10am-11am. No registration is necessary.  It’s not too late to get the reading done before then. We have copies available to borrow, or you can purchase a copy at the UMass Lowell Downtown Bookstore, or find the novel online.

The second round of discussions, covering the 2nd and 3rd Volumes—a.k.a. The Second and Final Stages of Pip’s Expecations, or Chapters 20-59—will be held August 16th and 17th at the same respective times.

Don’t forget that we have book club kits available for you to borrow for free if you’d like to host your own discussion!

Questions, comments are welcome. Send them to me, Sean Thibodeau, Community Planning Librarian at 978-674-1542.
