Famous Car Rally Stop this Saturday in Downtown - with Micky Ward
The Great Race is an antique, vintage, and collector car competitive controlled-speed endurance road rally on public highways. It is not a test of top speed. It is a test of a driver/navigator team’s ability to follow precise course instructions and the car’s (and team’s) ability to endure on a cross-country trip. The course instructions require the competing teams to drive at or below the posted speed limits at all times.
All vehicles are prohibited from using GPS devices and must take a predetermined route to arrive at each destination at a specific time. The race is in its 31st year and in 2014 the race begins in Ogunquit, ME and ends in The Villages, FL with their first overnight stop in Lowell.
They will have a stop in Lowell on Middle st. The first car is due due to roll in at 4:45 pm. They 100 race vehicles will be available for the public to enjoy and take photos with until 8pm and Micky Ward has said he will be joining the festivities.
But if you really enjoy classic cars -come early – starting at 11- and check out over 400 cars parked in downtown. They will be at the three parking lots in downtown plus at : Cruisin’ on Merrimack Street, and Lucy Larcom Park. There will also be a Kids’ Area with Touch a Truck at the Enterprise Lot on Middle Street leading up to the arrival of the Great Race.
